PICTURES: Kashi Cereal Caused Me an Acne Break Out!

By October 13, 2014No Comments

I grew up in the generation of working mothers and fathers, so I guess in a lot of ways, that’s how cereal became popular in my life.

In elementary school, cereal was the quick way to eat breakfast in the morning. It was fast, easy, and delicious. My parents always made sure that I had my favorite cereals ready for me in the cabinets. And it usually wasn’t just one brand either.

I loved Apple Jacks, Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Corn Flakes, Fruit Loops and … I can’t think of the rest. Didn’t really like Cap’n Crunch, Chex, or any of that wheat thin stuff. You know, as kids, who likes the healthy stuff?

Even as adults, who likes the healthy stuff?

So I thought I finally found the holy grail when I came across this new brand called Kashi because they had added fiber AND … get this, added omega-3!

Get the hell out of here!

My life was getting a little busy recently, a bunch of construction on my house, bills, and other chores so I thought, “Why not throw cereal into the mix? It’ll be a great way for me to get more calories into my diet because I’m trying to bulk and I won’t be breaking too many rules because it’s got omega-3 in it, right?”

WRONG.

Check these pictures out after 3-4 days of eating cereal.

The first day or so, I couldn’t tell what was happening. I did notice that my face started getting a little bit more … inflamed. It was redder, I started developing little red bumps. But I didn’t think much of it, maybe it was a fluke.

It wasn’t until another 3 or so days passed before I started noticing, “Oh shit, something’s wrong.” Excuse my French.

I thought back to what I had changed in my diet.

CRAP. Cereal.

And here I was, thinking that I was being all “healthy” eating omega-3 cereal with SOY milk. That’s right, I wasn’t even using regular milk which I so heavily promote AGAINST. And if you don’t know how bad milk is for you, you need to read THIS article HERE.

I was using SOY milk and still breaking out!

So I did what any scientist would do, I broke it down. Was it the soy milk that was causing acne? Or was it the cereal that was causing acne? Or perhaps, it was the combination of the two?

I have drank soy milk before, a lot of it over a period of time, and I was fine. Sure, it’s not the best thing for you. And more on that in THIS article. But it was better than cow’s milk.

So it wasn’t soy milk that was causing the break out.

Then it had to be the cereal. And it’s true, whenever I eat tons of cereal, I tend to break out. Not so much bread, but cereal. But why?

There must be something about mixing carbohydrates with protein and sugar that causes inflammation. Because that’s what I was eating in the morning for breakfast when I was eating Kashi cereal with soy milk.

1.) Kashi Cereal = Carbohydrates + Sugar
2.) Soy Milk = Protein

Even the omega-3 couldn’t save me from this one. And it surprised me a little because you would think that after having my diet healthy for years, that my body could “handle” cereal again. But I guess it just wasn’t designed to handle it. And there are certain foods that I can have time to time, but I should ultimately stay away from.

Just like we all know that doughnuts aren’t good for you. Having one or two every so often is okay. But if we have them day after day, morning after morning, we’re bound to see some effects. It doesn’t matter how healthy you are, doughnuts will never be good for you.

Even if you mix them with omega-3 oils ;).
