So it got pretty hot this past Wednesday where I was at.

92° F, to be exact.

It’s probably not as hot as where some of you might be experiencing, but I remember when I used to have acne, anything over warm was considered too hot.

But I think the most frustrating thing about the heat, when I used to have acne, is the fact that it really seemed to irritate my acne.

So here are some 4 quick tips on what you can do during the heat to prevent summer acne.

1.) Stay out of the heat

Obvious as this one is.  If it’s going to make you feel uncomfortable, turn on the air conditioning!  Find out how much it costs for you to use the air conditioning a few hours a day during the peak times of heat and turn on that cooling system.  If you can afford it of course, you should use it.  In the long run, in my opinion, it’s really not worth anymore frustration and stress dealing with the uncomfortable anxiety of feeling sticky AND having acne.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I used to break out, I subconsciously felt the need to feel extra clean, so when I felt dirty and stick, it just made me feel even more “dirty.”  I don’t know, that’s the only word that I can think of at the moment because that’s exactly the word I used to use when I looked out myself in the mirror when I was sticky and sweaty.

On top of that, I feel the need to mention this one (turning on a cooling system) because I grew up in an Asian household where we didn’t use the A/C much, we just endured it or turned on the ceiling fan.  It helped a bit, but not much when the room is on fire.  Today, I just turn on the A/C, close all the vents in the rest of the rooms and just enjoy it on low in my own room for a bit.

If you don’t have central air conditioning, consider getting a portable air conditioning unit that utilizes water vapor for cooling.  Basically, you put water inside, ice cubes, whatever you want that’s cool and the evaporated cool air is forced out by a fan system.  Real simple and much less expensive than running central air conditioning in your home for long periods at a time.

2.) Don’t wash your face but wash your face

What do I mean by this.

You want to make sure your face is clean but don’t wash your face to the point where it’s irritated.  To do this, if I feel my face is dirty or sticky, I usually just go to the sink or bathroom and rinse my face and neck with cold water to wash off any excess oil, sweat, or dirt that may be on my face.  I pat my face dry with a clean towel and that’s it!

The reason why I don’t use more facial soap is because the constant washing of my face will actually cause my body to adjust and produce even more oil!  That would counterproductive.

The point here is that you want to make sure you’re refreshed without pushing your body over the limit and negating any efforts you did before.

3.) Drink something cool

So you don’t want to do air conditioning from the outside?  Then do it from the inside of your body by drinking something ice cold.  It’ll help a bit.

The point is that you want to keep your body cool.  If you’re walking around outside, there’s no way you can reap the benefits of an air conditioning system right?  That’s fine, then drink something cold and your body will feel cooler.

The reason I’m saying this is because if you’re body is cool then you’re not sweating as much.  If you’re not sweating as much then you’re more likely not to be panicking about how sweaty, sticky, and disgusting you feel.  The less you feel disgusting, the less you’ll be creating worry about your acne.  The less worry you have about your acne, the less inflammation and breaking out will happen to you.

4.) Be okay with being sweaty and sticky

Here we’re going to get a little bit psychological.  This isn’t something that you can do physically, it’s more something to work on in your mind.  If you can become okay with feeling dirty and sticky, you’ll feel less self conscious and have less anxiety when you’re sweaty from the summer heat.  The lower your anxiety is about feeling gross from all the heat, the less likely you’ll break out from acne.

Because if you don’t know about it already, panic, stress, and excessive worry about your acne does eventually lead to more acne.  It’s an endless cycle and you don’t want to get trapped in the acne worry cycle.

You have to realize that being sweaty and sticky doesn’t cause acne.  So when you’re sweaty and sticky from the summer heat and the sun, that is not the cause of your acne.  It’s what’s on the inside that’s causing your acne.  So it’s okay to sweat from the heat and feel sticky.  In the bigger picture of things, avoiding getting hot won’t make too much of a different with your break outs.

It’s really more about your diet and how you take care of your body as a whole than just about how to avoid the sun and not sweat.  Of course, I’m not saying therefore it’s okay to hang out in the sun for hours at a time because you can really end up damaging your skin and get skin cancer Melanoma, but you get my point.

IMPORTANT EXAMPLE

Just remember this:

Person A: Has acne, is sweaty and sticky from the heat during the summer.

Person B: Does not have acne, is sweaty and sticky from the heat during the summer.

Person C: Has acne, is not sweaty and sticky from the heat during the summer.

Person D: Does not have acne, is not sweaty and sticky from the heat during the summer.

Either way, Person A and Person C both are going to continue to break out whether they are sweaty and sticky from the heat during the summer.  Person B and D are not going to break out regardless if they are in the summer, winter, spring, or fall.  So I hope this example helps you understand that the factor here is whether or not they HAVE acne, not whether or not they are in the summer.

BEING SWEATY CAN AGGRAVATE ACNE

If you’re sweaty and worrying, you can end up aggravating your acne to though.  This is because you’ll end up irritating your skin which is hypersensitive right now due to all the bacteria and inflammation going on inside and outside your body.

But it’s not just the sweat that can irritate and aggravating your acne, it’s also dirt, it’s excessive touching, excessive cleaning, excessive just about anything can lead to more acne out the outside WHEN YOU HAVE IT on the INSIDE.

So it’s important to tackle the problem from the inside and cure your acne from the inside.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF THIS WHOLE THING?

So what really makes a difference is the fact that Person B and Person D are clear from the INSIDE.
